# Taxes

> Set up tax rates and track what you've collected against what you've remitted.

Set up your tax rates once and apply them per line on estimates and invoices. ShineCRM also tracks what you've collected against what you've sent to the tax authority, so remittance is less of a guessing game. Taxes are managed by **owners and admins** under **Settings then Taxes**.

## Tax rates

Create the tax rates you charge (for example GST, or a combined provincial rate). On an [estimate](/guides/estimates) or [invoice](/guides/invoices), you apply the right rate per line, so a quote can mix taxable and non-taxable work correctly. Rate changes autosave.

<Note>
  Tax is calculated **after** any discount, on the discounted amount. That's the correct order, and it means the tax your customer sees always matches what they're actually paying.
</Note>

## Remittance tracking

Two tools help you stay on top of what you owe:

* **Tax report.** Compares the tax you've **collected** on paid invoices against the payments you've **recorded** as remitted to the tax authority. The gap is what you still owe.
* **Payment history.** Record each payment you make to the tax authority, and delete one if you logged it by mistake.

## Frequently asked

**Can I charge different taxes on different lines?**
Yes. Tax is applied per line, so one document can mix taxable and tax-exempt services.

**Does ShineCRM file my taxes for me?**
No. ShineCRM tracks what you've collected and what you've recorded as remitted so you (or your bookkeeper) can file accurately. For a clean export, see the data export options under **Settings then Export**.
